Hey there moms!
Welcome to June’s of Active Mom of the Month!
This is KATRINA GONZALEZ. An active mom of two, Kaleb and Khloe, and super encouraged business owner!
How many kids do you have and what are their ages? 2 kids (Kaleb 6 years old) (Khloe 9 months old)
Are you a stay at home mom or work outside the home? I work outside my home.
If you work for someone other than your family (inside or outside the home) what is your job? I own/operate 9Round 30 Minute Kickbox Fitness.
Pre-Covid- My days were long and full of mommy-ing while running a business. I take my son to school then I drive to one of our gyms, and work with my daughter in tow. I work until its time to pickup my son from school and then I pick him up and we go back to work at one of the gyms until about 6-7pm. When you run a family business everyone works, our days are semi scheduled but life happens all around you and dinner time is often in the car or at the gym.
Post Covid- Life is much slower. We go back to work June 1 and since I cannot have my kids at the gym, we will be getting creative on how to continue to work while being their full time caretaker.
My husband had always been supportive of me working out, he would buy me equipment and encourage me. He even started his own fitness journey.
I was an active kid. I played sports almost year-round, I was on the dance team in high school etc. When I got to college life changed, priorities changed, I fell into bad habits. I moderately worked out and then started seeing a doctor who would prescribe weight loss and water pills. I took them and was pleased with the results, BUT it wasn’t sustainable. Once I stopped taking them, I gained an incredible amount of weight.
After graduation, I worked LONG days and was crazy set on career climbing. I progressively gained more weight. I would travel all over the country for work and rationalized my food choices because I was not paying for the meals my company was. I was seriously overweight for my wedding but that didn’t even phase me.
I was diagnosed with PCOS and was having difficulty getting pregnant. I was told that I needed to lose weight to induce fertility. My husband had always been supportive of me working out, he would buy me equipment and encourage me. He even started his own fitness journey. It wasn’t until we found 9Round 30 Minute Kickbox fitness that our lives truly changed. We found community, we found accountability, we found a routine. After trying for four years to conceive, I FINALLY lost some weight and got pregnant!
I continued to workout until I was 8 months pregnant, I had a great trainer who would take the time to ask how I was doing and encourage me to listen to my body. I felt safe and cared for, it also helped that my OBGYN worked out at the same 9Round I did. I felt safe. After having my son, we knew we had to be a part of this 9Round movement. We wanted to give people back their hope and their health.
Pre Covid, I worked out 3-5 times a week. Now, our workouts have moved online so it’s been easier to do daily. Our 9Round workouts are 30 minutes and are full body kickboxing routines. We can burn 300-500 calories each workout. Additionally, we’ve used our quarantine time to get out and run/walk 2 miles 3 times a week.
I was not a fitness fanatic. I do not look like what other people think a fitness trainer should look like. I still have a few drinks from time to wine, and I love Dr. Pepper…. BUT I am definitely on my own journey. I hope that my honesty and life change story can help someone start their own fitness adventure.
Katrina’s Advice to Moms:
We worked out and watched our diet for ourselves. Now we should be doing these things for our kids. Not only to get them started on healthy habits, but so we can ensure that we are taking care of ourselves so that we can take better care of our families!
I LOVE being my “Little Gz” Mommy. I love watching them grow and develop their personalities. I love hearing my son randomly tell me he loves me, I love seeing my baby girl smile when I walk into the room. I am truly very grateful to be their Mommy.
I think as a Mom, your motivation should change. “BK” (before kids) We worked out and watched our diet for ourselves. Now we should be doing these things for our kids. Not only to get them started on healthy habits, but so we can ensure that we are taking care of ourselves so that we can take better care of our families! Healthy body, healthy mind, healthy spirit.
